Janik Bürgin
Trained as a photographer with a degree from the Zurich School of Design, Janik Bürgin consistently interrogates the medium-specificity of photography. His ambition is to develop a body of work over time, grounded in processes that resist acceleration and unfold at their own pace.
Bürgin experiments with abstraction, creating colour compositions that possess a painterly quality while being produced entirely through photographic means. His series recall the colour field paintings of the Abstract Expressionists, yet establish a distinct visual language of their own. Working across a wide range of photographic techniques, he explores the possibilities of image-making while approaching the self as an accumulation of narrative fragments with different temporalities.
Bürgin made his exhibition debut at Art Basel in 2021, followed by exhibitions at Fondation Fernet-Branca (FR), Die Mobiliar (CH), and Kunsthalle Palazzo (CH). His work has since been acquired by private and public collections internationally. In 2026, Bürgin co-founded Ein Zeichen von Herzen, a charitable initiative supporting children facing challenging life circumstances. He lives and works in Basel.
